Answering Questions You May Have

Frequently Asked Questions

The Staffmax team knows travel nursing inside out. If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, don’t hesitate to reach out to our agents. We’re happy to answer any questions, no matter how small!

Q: What are the best specialties for travel nursing?

A: Because of our wide network, Staffmax offers jobs in all specialties. You can search which ones are available now in our database. Demand for particular specialties fluctuates over time, but the ones that usually have the most jobs available are ER, OR, ICU, med surg, telemetry, and L&D.

Q: Do I need a lot of experience?

A: Travel nurses generally need one year of experience in your specialty, though some positions require more. Most healthcare facilities prefer travel nurses to have hospital experience, and some required travel nursing experience. Your Staffmax agent can help you find positions that suit your stage in your career.

Q: Can I bring along friends or family?

Of course! Many travel nurses travel with friends, partners, spouses, kids, and more. Whether your travel buddy is another travel nurse or has a different career altogether, your agent can help you find a way to live the traveling life you’re dreaming of.

Q: Can I bring along a pet?

A: Pets are a welcome addition to our Staffmax travel nursing family. Your agent can help you find pet-friendly Staffmax housing, or you can take a generous housing stipend and find a home for you and your furry friend wherever you’d like.

Q: How much orientation will I get on each assignment?

A: Every healthcare facility offers different orientations, but they all make sure that you get enough information to do your job. Your Staffmax support team can help you choose assignments that suit your level of experience. We’ll make sure you’re in the right place for your interests and skills.

Q: Do I need to apply for assignments far in advance?

A: There is no strict rule for how far in advance you need to apply for a travel nursing assignment. Some nurses may join Staffmax a year before they’re ready to travel, and some may apply and be on their way to their first assignment within a few weeks or even days. If you want to travel sometime soon, then the best time to fill out your application is … now. If you won’t be ready to go for a while, we can always keep your information on file. And you’ll be ready to grab any great opportunity that pops up.

Q: Can I take vacation?

A: You can, you should, and it’s easy to do! Flexibility is the biggest benefit of travel nursing. You can always set up your assignments so you have a break in between. Many travel nurses enjoy working on an assignment somewhere new, then taking a week or two to relax, hike, or tour the area.

Q: How long is the average assignment?

A: An average assignment is usually around 13 weeks, but many are shorter or longer. Your Staffmax agent can help you find assignments that are the length you’re looking for.

Q: What happens if there’s a travel problem or emergency?

A: Staffmax is here to help whenever you need us. If you miss a flight or get caught in bad weather, you can call your Staffmax team any time, day or night. We’ll sort it out and make sure you stay safe and get to where you need to go.
